A STATEMENT TO THE PUBLIC

The world is not about to end. But the stable environmental conditions on which ordinary life depends are already weakening.

Climate change is no longer principally a forecast about the end of this century. It is becoming a daily-life problem: hotter homes, disrupted sleep, unreliable harvests, higher food prices, water restrictions, smoke exposure, transport failures, damaged infrastructure, rising insurance costs and public services placed under repeated strain.

THE EROSION OF RELIABILITY

For most people, climate change will first feel less like a single dramatic catastrophe and more like a steady erosion of reliability.

Summer becomes something to prepare for. Food prices rise because of events occurring thousands of miles away. Certain homes become dangerously hot. Flooding appears in places that rarely flooded before. Railways and roads fail more often during extremes. Insurance becomes more expensive or unavailable. Wildlife arrives earlier, moves north or disappears. Rivers run unusually low. Smoke from distant fires changes the colour of the sky. The NHS and emergency services face repeated seasonal surges.

HEAT WILL NOT ARRIVE ALONE

Warmer air and oceans intensify evaporation and rainfall. The practical result is not simply less rain or more rain, but greater unreliability: dry ground followed by flash flooding, damaged crops, overwhelmed drainage systems, sewage discharges, road closures and interruptions to power and transport.

Food will become more volatile in price and availability. A drought, flood or heatwave in one major producing region can move through globally connected markets and appear weeks later in the price of bread, olive oil, coffee, rice, vegetables, animal feed or fish.

THE OCEANS ARE CHANGING

The oceans are warming, becoming more acidic and losing oxygen. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, while stronger stratification can reduce the mixing that carries oxygen into deeper water.

This does not mean the oceans will suddenly become lifeless. It means increasing stress on marine food webs, movement of species towards cooler waters, greater pressure on fisheries and increased risk of low-oxygen zones in vulnerable regions. Fish follow temperature, oxygen, prey and habitat. The consequences reach supermarkets, fishing fleets, coastal employment and the diets of millions.

EL NIÑO, FIRE AND SMOKE

El Niño is a natural Pacific climate cycle that releases additional ocean heat into the atmosphere and alters rainfall around the world. It is not the cause of long-term warming. It now operates on top of a much warmer, human-altered baseline.

Wildfires still require ignition, and land management remains crucial. But extreme heat, prolonged dryness and low vegetation moisture create conditions in which fires spread farther, burn more intensely and become harder to control. Smoke can travel across countries and oceans, harming health far from the flames.

COMPOUND DISRUPTION

A heatwave reduces crop yields. Drought lowers river levels. Low rivers constrain water supplies, navigation, industry and electricity generation. Dry vegetation raises fire risk. Fires damage homes and release smoke. Smoke harms health and interrupts travel. Insurance losses rise. Food and energy prices respond.

None of these effects exists in isolation.

WE ARE LIVING THROUGH THE OPENING STAGES

Humanity is not waiting for climate change. It is living through its opening stages.

The immediate future is unlikely to resemble a sudden universal collapse. It is more likely to involve increasingly frequent interruptions to ordinary life, followed by periods of apparent normality, then further disruption. That intermittent pattern encourages complacency because each individual crisis eventually passes. But the baseline continues to move.

THE SEVERITY OF FUTURE DAMAGE IS NOT FIXED

Every tonne of carbon dioxide avoided reduces additional warming. Every fraction of a degree avoided reduces risk. Adaptation can prevent substantial suffering: cooler buildings, stronger power grids, restored wetlands, urban trees, flood protection, better water management, resilient food systems and properly funded health services.

But adaptation cannot indefinitely substitute for cutting emissions. There are temperatures and rates of change beyond which ecosystems, infrastructure and communities cannot adapt without severe loss.

THE HONEST MESSAGE

The public should neither panic nor look away.

Climate stability should be treated as essential infrastructure—like clean water, electricity, public health and national security.

Because that is what it is.
